Home : Garbage & Recyling

Town of Wausau residents receive garbage pick up weekly and recycling pick up is every other week at your curbside.  The Town contracts with Advanced Disposal. Recycling is not only important to the environment but it is mandated by the state.  Therefore, it is important that all residents participate in recycling. If you miss the recycling pick up date, Advanced Disposal also has a drop off center at their facility at 5509 Fuller Street in the Village of Weston.  The hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. till noon on Saturday.

Here is what you should recycle:

 # 1 Plastics

  Rinse and remove caps and rings. No kitty litter or ice cream pails, motor oil or  pesticide bottles. 

 #2 Plastics

  Rinse and remove caps and rings.  These plastics include milk jugs, pop bottles, and detergent bottles.

 Glass

  Rinse and remove caps and metal rings.  Any color glass.  Only bottles and jars.  DO NOT BREAK GLASS.  No ceramics, dishes, or window/mirror glass.

 Aluminum Cans

  Do not crush cans.  No pies pans, aluminum foil or scrap aluminum.

 Tin/Bi-metal Cans

  Rinse cans, keep lids inside and pinch top.  Labels may stay on cans.

 Paper Products

  Corrugated cardboard-look for the wavy middle.  Flatten boxes.  They do not need to be tied.

 Office Paper,  Newspaper, Magazines-Mix Papers

  Office paper , newspapers, books, etc.

 Used Motor Oil

  Motor oil should be left curbside on your scheduled recycling day in a plastic    container with a lid.

 Roof Shingles

  Please call Veolia for containers at 359-6637.

 Batteries

  Lead acid batteries (car, lawnmower, motorcycle, etc.)


Please be sure to place your recyclable items in your red recycling container or a container that is clearly identifiable.

Composting is recommended for yard waste, leaves, trees, brush, stumps  plant clippings. The DNR has literature available for free for anyone interested.

If you have chemicals, cleaning solvents, and/or auto fluids that you would like to dispose, please contact the Marathon County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 848 -9060 or 446-3339.  There are limited hours of operation.  

The Marathon County Hazardous Waste Collection Site is located at the Marathon County Solid Waste Department (landfill), R18500 E. Highway 29, Ringle.

The Solid Waste Department is located on the north side of Highway 29 approximately 12 miles east of Wausau and 1.5 miles east of the County Q exit.  Collection services are available  5 days a week, 9 months out of the year

All individuals needing hazardous waste service must CALL IN ADVANCE to make an appointment. This ensures that trained staff is available to assist customers and provide for the safe management of their hazardous materials.

Appointment days are Mondays through Fridays - Times are between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The number to call is 715-446-3101 extension 100.

The Hazardous Waste Collection Site WILL ACCEPT: creosote; de-greasers; fuel; ether; cleaning solvents; drain cleaners; dry cleaning fluids; gun cleaners; fungicides; herbicides; insecticides; metal cleaners; mildew cleaners; oven cleaners; floor/furniture polish; nail polish; removers; thinners; oil-based paints; varnish; turpentine; hobby materials; photography cleaners; aerosol paints (no empty cans); sharps (only accepted if packaged in commercial sharps containers or heavy plastic detergent or bleach bottle with a screw on cap and clearly marked "bio-hazard" or "sharps" and "DO NOT RECYCLE").

The clean sweep program will NOT ACCEPT: ammunition; explosives; freon; latex paint; fire extinguishers or compressed gas cylinders (if empty take to landfill to recycle as scrap metal for free); medical wastes; radioactive materials; or water-based stains or caulks.
